Advent is a time of waiting – waiting for light in the darkness, for the fulfillment of hope, for the coming of Christ – and culminates in the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus. This joyful occasion both looks back to his historical birth two-thousand years ago and foreshadows a future coming, the parousia, of Christ. But there is also a third and intermediate coming of the divine Word, an interior advent, spoken of by St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153): through our prayer and meditation on the Word of God, Christ visits us in the silence of our hearts. Meister Eckhart (1260-1328) similarly speaks of the birth of the Word in eternity, in time, and in our hearts.
Join John Marquez, MATS, for an Advent service of light, of words, and of silence as he incorporates insights from the Gospel of John, the Roman Catholic liturgical tradition, the writings of Christian mystics, and his own ruminations on the alternations of light and darkness in the heavens.

John graduated from Seattle University in June 2008 with a Master of Arts in Transforming Spirituality. From 1995 to 2003 he lived as a Trappist monk at the Abbey of New Clairvaux in northern California.
